Let me first say the I unequivocally love breakfast. It is delicious. I have been known, on more than one occasion, to make brinner (breakfast for dinner, for the uninitiated). In my opinion, breakfast does have to be new, innovative, or even different to be great; it just has to be well executed. French chefs used to test their new apprentices by how well they could make a simple omelet. It is not nearly as highbrow but I can learn pretty much everything about a diner by how well they do fried eggs and pancakes.
The Yorkshire Restaurant, as a good diner should be, is of a different era. Located in a strip mall just over the border into Prince William County, Yorkshire Restaurant is still doing things like they should be. The doors are creaky, there are ashtrays at every table, and the tables have location advertisements printed on them. Keeping in line with good diner etiquette you are offered coffee almost immediately once you sit down and the refills keep coming.
The breakfast hit the stop just right. The pancakes were perfectly golden brown, just the right about chewy, and topped with a big melting ball of butter. The hash browns were the right mix of crunchy and creamy; I’ll probably order them extra crispy next time. Passing the test for an American short order cook, the eggs were perfect over easy.
In other parts of the country a good breakfast diner is nothing remarkable. In Northern Virgina, they are a bit more rare. If you are looking for a good breakfast done quick, cheap, and well done I suggest you make the trip down/up/over to Manassas and go to the Yorkshire Restaurant.
